Dear Colleagues:

This announcement is strictly for the Swainsboro campus and Swainsboro faculty, staff, and students.  It is being sent to the entire campus community, regardless of location, as we know some people travel between campuses and the like. 

For faculty, staff, and students on the Augusta University campus and Georgia Southern campus, you will follow any guidelines or decisions made by those respective campuses in the coming days – we ‘follow their lead,’ so to speak, when it comes to emergency management planning at those locations.

After meeting with our Emergency Response Committee yesterday, I have decided to close the Swainsboro campus at 5:00 p.m. today, Tuesday, August 29^th and reopen at 8:00 a.m., on Thursday, August 31^st, resuming normal operations.  There will be no classes or activities tomorrow (Wednesday) and faculty & staff will not report, except for those deemed essential.  Dining services will be providing information to our dorm students on how food service will be handled, and the Provost will be reaching out directly to faculty.

This is a serious storm approaching and a lot of wind and rain will impact our area.  We encourage everyone to stay safe and adhere to any campus safety announcements that may be forthcoming.  Here is a website can also be helpful as we all prepare:   National Hurricane Preparedness | National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (noaa.gov). 

 If any students feel that they need assistance in the coming days, please reach out to our 24/7 Christie Campus Health Support Line.  Our campus police will also be available around the clock.  If you will be traveling any this week, please be aware of storm conditions and potentially heavier traffic due to coastal evacuations by monitoring local weather conditions.  Keep your cell phones and other devices charged in case of power outages.  Also, please consider powering off your computer before leaving campus. 

Our campus also participates in the ConnectED Emergency Notification System, so if you have not signed up, this would be a good time to do so.  When the college issues a ConnectED notification, you can receive the notifications via text message on your cell phone.  To view, update, and/or add your cell phone number to the ConnectED system, go to the web link listed below and follow the steps listed in the “Instructions for signing up for ConnectED.”

At this time, and after reviewing the latest information that is available, there are no plans to change campus operations this week, close the campus in any way, or cancel any classes. 

I do believe we need to be fully prepared for wind and rain in the area, particularly Friday morning – this is a serious storm.  We encourage everyone to stay safe and adhere to any campus safety announcements that may be forthcoming.  As shared last month when Hurricane Ian was approaching, this website can also be helpful as we all prepare and assist you in tracking the storm:  National Hurricane Center (noaa.gov)

After meeting with our Emergency Response Committee this morning, I have decided to close the Swainsboro campus at 3:30pm tomorrow, Thursday, September 29^th and remain closed through Friday, September 30^th.  Normal Swainsboro operations and classes can and should continue up to closing time on Thursday and dining services will be open until 5:30pm Thursday evening.  Dining services will also be open from 10am-2pm on Friday.  For students remaining in the dorms through Thursday night and Friday, we will provide more updates to you on dining services in the coming days, as needed.
